Well I'm just going to post here for now bc I finally got up and ran this morning. The last time I did anything was last Monday when I went to the Y. I did go to an amusement park all day Tues and Wed last week so I think that accounts for some exercise! :) I did behave myself.

I like this thread bc it's keeping me accountable. When I see everyone else posting what they did It makes me want to get my workout in so I can post too. This morning I went on a run/jog for 35 mins. Tomorrow I'm hoping to get back to the YMCA so I can do the stairmaster and weights.

Since keeping track when this thread started I'm down 5#'s!!!! :)

Great April!! I got derailed last week and haven't gotten back into it like I need to yet! I got hit with a bad migraine Sunday night that hasn't been kind! I'm hoping to walk tonight after dinner and start running again tomorrow morning.

I agree that posting here is good motivation and I've lost 5 pounds and have been feeling much better (which is most important!).

Let's keep moving!!!

I agree it's hard to get motivated once you take a break and July has always been a bad month for me. I hope your migraine goes away and you can get back into too!

For those of you walking, I found a good article in the September 2008 Fitness magazine. They have 3 "get-lean" walking routines.

Burn Fat: Steady-Pace Walk
Aim for a speed at which you're hustling but still able to speak in sentences (your rate of perceived exertion, or RPE, on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is sitting still and 10 is a full-tilt sprint, should be about 6 or 7). Depending on your fitness level, this will be somewhere between a 13- and 17-minute mile, which will keep you in the exercise zone.

Maintain this pace until you've reached your time goal, and not only will you burn more calories, you'll boost your heart health.

Calories burned (45 minutes): 182 (17-minute mile) to 302 (13-minute mile)*

Look Twice as Toned: Hills Walk
Tackling hills or stairs will sculpt your legs and butt double-time while burning big calories -- 58 percent more at a 17-minute-mile pace.

Start out on a flat surface for 15 minutes at a speed at which you're hustling but still able to speak in sentences (RPE: 6 or 7).
Find a hill or some steps -- or set your treadmill to a 4 to 6 percent incline -- and walk uphill quickly for 2 minutes.
Walk downhill to recover, or if you're on a treadmill, walk at a 0 percent incline for 2 minutes.
Aim to maintain your speed or go faster so that you can speak just a few words at a time (RPE: 8). Only one set of stairs? Walk up and down for 4 minutes.
Continue up- and downhill intervals until you've reached your time goal. Beginners can alternate between hills and 5 minutes on a flat surface.

Calories burned (45 minutes): 220 (17-minute mile) to 366 (13-minute mile)

Get Lean and Melt Calories: Intervals Walk
You'll torch more fat in less time by bumping up your pace a little for manageable bursts -- accelerating from a 17-minute mile to a 13-minute mile means 66 percent more calorie burn.

Warm up at your regular pace (RPE: 6) for 6 minutes.
Alternate these intervals: Walk as fast as you can for 1 minute (RPE: 8), then slow down to your regular pace (RPE: 6) for 2 minutes to recover.
Repeat intervals until you've reached your time goal.

Calories burned (45 minutes): 241 (17-minute mile) to 326 (13-minute mile)

Thanks for posting that!! I did really well early last week. I even exercised before I drove to Columbus and Wednesday night after I drove home. But then "the trip" stalled me for a few days. I started back up walking Monday night and Tuesday night and hope to walk again today and then run tomorrow.

I ordered a new ipod shuffle. I've been using a regular big ipod strapped to my arm and don't like it. I'm thinking that the little bitty clip shuffle should be a lot more convenient for running in particular.

Ok finally got our thread up. Sorry it took so long. I am avoiding work right now and yesterday was a bad day for me. I finally broke down last night at 1 and let it all out. I hate travelling and so does Mike and he's been assigned a job in Beaumont for the next 7 months. I hate being alone and I like my routing and well it'll all have to change up for a little bit. I think I'm going to look for a gym bag and keep it in my trunk so I go straight to the gym after work and I'll be looking at recipes that I like and can tolerate for 5 nights a week.

So my goal for the month is running 4 days a week and hopefully 4 miles each week. I ran 1.5 miles Saturday and 1.6 miles last night. Maybe I'll get fit and trim fast from this new lifestyle change.

Can I join????? I am trying to get back on the regular excerice routine. The last 2 days I rode my bike around town and in the country. My inner thighs sure feel it!

Carla - I will have to reread your post. It has SOOO much information! It is great!

Doesn't waitressing qualify???? LOL!!! All I do is run around like chicken without a head! Okay....we will just consider that extra working out.

My goal is to work out 5 days a week... um won't make it this week! But I WILL next week!:)

Catherine- I think that's a GREAT idea to put your bag in the car! It will be much easier to go straight from work! You can do it!!

Angela- Yes, all that running around should count for something! :)

Tricia- You will like the smaller iPod much better for running!!

Ok... from the same Fitness magazine, there were a couple of other interesting things food wise related to walking...

7 Power Foods for Walkers

"Women who ate muesli and fruit (or homemade trail mix) before exercising burned twice as much fat during a workout as those who ate cornflakes, white bread and jam. Mix 1/2 cup Kashi GoLean cereal, 1 large whole grain pretzel broken into pieces, Genisoy crisps and 1/4 cup walnuts"

"A 78 calorie egg contains all the amino acids your muscles need to recover post-walk. It will also help ward off hunger. Women in a study who chose eggs rather than a bagel for breakfast ate 264 fewer calories throughout the day"

"Cherries may reduce inflammation. Exercisers who drank 12 oz of cherry juice twice a day for eight days were less sore after strength training than those who didn't"

"Eating Salmon may help you from getting winded. The Omega 3 fatty acids help improve lung function."

"The protein in soybeans helps regulate blood sugar to give you a consistently high level of energy on longer walks"

"Studies show that we lose calcium when we sweat. One 120 calorie cup of plain low fat yogurt provides 40% of your RDA"

"All dark leafy greens contain bone-strengthening vitamin K, but raw spinach packs a whopping 161% of the RDA in one 7 calorie cup. Eat it in a salad to supplement each skeleton boosting stroll"

Ok where is everyone today????????????????????

Not that I have room to talk since I didn't get a workout in yesterday.... :D

This morning I pushed myself for a longer run, not sure exactly how far but went 40 mins. I only stopped twice to catch my breathe and a drink but that's bc I had 4 different "hills" I had to go up. I was thinking of the article you posted Carla and I'm like well it's good and my heart rate was up! lol
The other thing I did the one time I stopped to walk was lunges. Guys on the golf course this mornign probably thought I was crazy! :p I live in a very urban "suburb" a lot of farms (what's left) and open space so the route I choose was near a few farms and the golf course. On the way back while doing my lunges I was sooooo tempted to run onto the golf course through the sprinklers!

I did well eating wise today although I'm sitting here with baked lays sour cream and onion. I wanted something salty/crunchy..... (Have a vistor coming soon, so that's what I'm blaming it on! )

So what did everyone else do today? I think I'm down another # will check for sure in the am.

I haven't been running in the morning, but the last 3 nights we have walked 2.5 miles each night. DH will be working from home tomorrow, so we're planning on running early!

Went for a bike ride yesterday. Didn't go for as long as I wanted, but did some. It was a tad cool here yesterday and I was very cold, so cut my bike ride short. Planning on getting on the treadmill today and do my muscle building excercises. I need to get back to the weights (only 2 1/2 pounds each, but QUITE enough for m! LOL!)

I have no problem "getting" on you, I need it to. Summer is always hard for some reason. I couldn't get up this morning in time and DH has to leave early for work. Believe it or not my legs/butt are really sore from the lunges during my run/job yesterday.
I'm going to atttempt to do weights for upper body and core in a little bit so I at least have some weights in. Maybe the kids and I will go for a bike ride later.

Too cool??? I can't imagine that!! We were having record heat wave with 20 days over 102...it cooled down late this week to 98 :rotfl:

We'll be here to cheer you on Catherine!! Just let us know your goal and we'll keep at you!:)
Tricia-how have the workouts been going?

Angela-Yes, anything counts- you just want to get moving!!

April- I really need to try to start working in some upper body strength training too- you are motivating me to do that!

DH worked from home today so we ran 3.5 miles this morning. I really didn't think I would meet my 5 day goal, but I did!!! We have tennis courts by our house and we are going to look at racquets tomorrow- we used to play in high school/ college and would have fun playing again!

Great job! I didn't get over there yesterday morning, I forgot DH needed to go into work early. So I didn't do anything yesterday (well cleaned house etc) But I am dressed and ready to go for a run as soon as I'm done my coffee and Daily Survey. :) I have some free weights downstairs, that I need to use, bc it's been over 2 wks since an upper body workout.

DH and DS sometimes play raquetball together, they both enjoy it.

We both played on the tennis team in high school and college and played a few years afterwards, but haven't played since the kids. I'm kind of excited about getting back into it!

Whew...on to shower and get ready!

Great job!!! I actually pushed myself further today too. Except I was thinking of you, Cate and Tricia when I was running/jogging. I think it was 3.4 almost 4 miles this morning. I altered my route so I have to go drive it to get exact mileage but it was 40 mins with more hills. Towards the end I kept thinking, gotta push myself, gotta push myself so I can go back and post! lol
Now that I'm all showered etc, I have no desire to do an upper body workout, but I know I really should since we're (me and the kids) are leaving for the beach tomorrow morning for a few days.

Well, DH wanted to do another long run again this morning. We did about 5.5 miles. The kids got up earlier today and we got out about an hour earlier than yesterday- big difference in the temperature! I also filled 2 water bottles 3/4 full of water last night and froze them. Then filled the rest with water before we left and threw in another bottle of just water...worked great. At our halfway point in the run, they were at least half melted and had some nice cold water. I told him to go down to the next intersection this time before we turned around...then I realized it was a big ol' hill! I tried to tell him nevermind, but he said nope you called it :rotfl:. But, at least I had a nice down hill to start the way back!

It's supposed to be a litte cooler this week...well, under 100! So, that might help a little!

Oh man. I couldn't imagine trying to work out outside in 100 degrees. Way to go Carla.

Today I focused on getting back into weight training. It felt good once I was done. :)

Well I was going to take tonight off but I ate like a pig. I can't get over how hungry I was all day and I tried all the tricks: drinking water, eating fruit, tried some hot tamales, nothing worked! So after eating lots of crap I felt guilty and drove to the gym at 8:30 and biked for 45 minutes.

Good for you for getting to the gym!! I think we all have days like that with eating junk- I know I do!

Unfortunately, I wasted a nice cloudy morning yesterday and didn't get out and run. I did get the house cleaned though- so guess that was beneficial lol. It was unusually cool (low 90's) last night so we walked about 3 miles after dinner and played kick ball with DS. I am really lacking motivation lately though....ugh!!! It's much easier on the weekend because DH goes running with me. I have to work on motivated myself to get back into my weekday routine! We seem to have broken our 100 degree weather, so that should help a little. I just need to get back out there!!

Well, I got tired of sounding like a broken record saying that I need to do the Wii Fit again. So, I just did 40 minutes on the Wii Fit. I did the Yoga and most of the strength training. Last time I did them, I increased the reps on the lunges and squats and those are killer- my legs are wobbly lol. But at least I got off my butt and did it!! Now I need to finish up cleaning the house and get a few things done with the kids!

Have a great day!

Ok ladies, you have been doing really well!

Sunday I left for the beach early morning, it rained the first half of the day, but let me tell you where we go it's a trek from the car onto the beach to get close enough to the water carrying stuff! We did go for an hour on Sunday then 3 hrs on the boardwalk at night for the kids to ride some rides etc.
Monday one of my SIL's ate an ice cream and wanted to walk it off, so I left the kids with my other SIL and nephew and we walked down the beach. She's a power walker like I am and before we knew it we covered a lot of ground. (When we got back other SIL was shocked we made it down to the lighthouse I have NO CLUE how far it was though!) I do know we walked for 30 mins in the surf along the beach at a fast pace.
Then nephew and neice went with the kids and I back to the boardwalk Monday night for another 4 hrs after spending 5 + at the beach.

Tuesday I packed up but did take the kids onto the beach for an hour and a half before we headed home.

I did eat pretty well and didn't splurge even though I was on vaca. I can't really tell on the scale this morning, bc I'm just finishing up the whole monthly thing. :)

This morning I did get my tired up out of bed at 630 and tried to take a run, either I was tired or didn't feel well or both bc I struggled to make it 30 mins. BUT since I've been bad about getting to the Y the last few weeks I did go down to the basement and pull out DH's free weights and do a little upper body, So I'm glad I got something in today but I'm hoping tomorrow is better.

Glad to see everyone is doing so well!

Thanks for posting that picture Catherine! I think I would like that- hopefully the new Y will have one!!

April- sounds like you got some workouts mixed in with the vacation!

I did 45 minutes on the Wii Fit again today- I'm still so sore! One thing I like about the Wii Fit is that it teaches you the correct way to do the exercises, so you don't have to do 50 of them to really feel it!!

We've been walking around the development after dinner- nice change of scenery! I think the past 2 nights we walked around 3 miles each. Tonight we ended up walking a little over 4 miles...seems that someone  took a wrong turn and we got a tad lost! lol

I'm not looking forward to running tomorrow morning, but at least having DH there will push me to do it!

Oh and Catherine, unfortunately I had one of those days of eating a lot of junk...ugh! So, maybe I needed that extra half mile anyway!

Ok I haven't actually run this week but I have gone and done cardio on a regular basis. I took Wednesday off because I needed a break but last night I went and did the eliptical for 45 and the stairclimber for 15 because I got sucked into Project Runway and have never seen it before. Kinda cool but like all reality shows very bratty.

Planning on going today and doing weights so I will probably do a very quick 1 mile run cardio wise and nothing else.

I haven't posted bc I've been slacking until this morning. I need to get back into a routine not only for me but the kids as school is only 2 wks away. So I hauled my butt out of bed this morning to the Y (first time in about 3 wks) and did 40 mins on the stairmaster and 25 mins of abs/upper body workout.

I'm hoping to get there at least 3 more mornings this week, bc I need to get back into a routine!!

April- I understand....I'm having a hard time getting back into my routine also!! Hopefully in the next week or two I will get back on schedule!! It has been raining here for days which doesn't help my motivation!

Having DH here to run on the weekends and walk at night does help though. I really didn't want to walk last night, but felt like I should. We ended up walking about 3 miles at a pretty good pace. It was nice to get the kids out and we talked while we walked. Probably won't run until Friday, but walking is better than nothing!! I think I am shooting for Sept 1 to start back into a strength training routine!

Way to get up and go April! Sometimes just dragging yourself the first time or two can restart a habit.

It has been rainy here too Carla which makes it really hard to get motivated to go anywhere. I have a system though that I am going to make work in that when it is not raining I am driving to the gym and when it is I will just utilize the treadmills in the apartment "gym" so that way I have no excuses not to work out.

I did make it last night and did about 45 mins of weights. Tonight is a cardio night so I will probably try and run again. I can't wait to weigh in on Monday morning because I think I'll be down at least 1 maybe 2 pounds this week!

Well, we've averaged walking about 3 miles each night this week. DH worked from home yesterday and we ran 4 miles. Then this morning we were exploring a different direction and ended up hitting a couple of dead ends and detours and before it was all over we ended up running 6.2 miles! At 3 miles we stopped and let DS play at the park for about 15 minutes while we rehydrated. There were some tough hills too, but somehow we finally made it home! I asked DH if he was secretly training me for a marathon!:rotfl: When we were leaving, he asked me how much water I was taking (he thought too much), but in the end, he was glad I was prepared! lol

Now off to eat and relax! Have a great weekend girls!!!:sunshine:

We ran 6.4 miles today...not really planned again- it's just so easy to get turned around in these neighborhoods! We are talking about looking for a 10k to train for. I told him we could try a half marathon at Disney but I think I was only kidding lol.

Having more water and eating a spoonful of peanut butter after does seem to help- thanks for those tips!!!

Hope you all have a great week!!

Haven't reported in lately. I have been so-so in the excericising category. I have lost some weight though! Partly because of my heartburn issue, but I have kept it off for about 4 weeks. My shorts/pants are all getting loose. I will have to buy another pair of my waitressing capris because they keep falling down (gotta love that!).

So....even though I REFUSE to weigh myself, I do know that I have lost weight. All the shorts I bought at the beginning of the summer are a little too big for me. Hoping to keep it off and maybe lose a few more pounds. The kids are off of school for 3 days for the fair next week, so the week after that I should be on my schedule for good.

It's the last day of the month...how did everyone do??

I finally worked up to jogging more than 4 miles. YEA!! I worked out 6 days this week, culiminating in a 60 minute jog today worth 9 weight watchers points. Holy smokes!! I'm seriously considering training for a mini marathon because I think it would keep me on track to continue building up a little each week. My only fear is what will happen to my running when winter hits? I reaaaaaalllly don't like running on a treadmill.

That's great Tricia!! We've managed to work out 7 days this week either walking 4 miles or running 4+ miles. I'm considering training for a mini marathon to...I think we can do it!:cooldance: But, like you, I have a hard time running on the treadmill! On Fridays, we're doing around 4 miles and then Sat and Sun are close to or a little over 6 miles each. Somedays I wonder how we do it.. but when we run so far out, you gotta run back if you want to get home lol.

Keep it up!!

I did fairly well. I didn't do too hot this week but I haven't been feeling it when I go to the gym. I think I'm going to stick with my August goal for September as well.

 You ladies are awesome!
It was so intermittent for me with all of our activities, and most days I was just worn out.
BUT it is Sunday the start of a new week and since I held my own (weight) during vacation this morning I did get up and go for a run/jog. Since school starts Tues, I'm hoping to get back into my routine. I went out for about 40 mins this morning. Tomorrow and Tues will be out around here again, bc the Y doesn't open until later tomorrow and Tues with it being the 1st day of school I'll need an earlier start.

And I will keep myself accountable, I NEED to get these #'s off!
