I thought it might be fun to have an exercise challenge for August? Anyone interested? I'm hoping it might make me motivated to get to the gym and workout :)

We could do days, hours, minutes whatever you are interested in. We can just do a thread and everyone can pick their own way to be accountable. I know I do better with X number of days per month but others like X number of minutes per month.

I am compiling a list for the August Challenge. It is not too late to join. I will start the Official August Challenge thread to track our progress next week. Here are the participants so far (20 of us!!):

I would join in! The boys start school on the 3rd, so I can get back into a somewhat normal routine!!!

That would be cool Tricia. I'd be happy with a quarter or two in my account each month for meeting my exercise goal. I need to figure out what other little competitions we can do around here for prizes ;)

Abso-Froot-ly! :cooldance:

I've been trying to keep up a decent exercise regimen but lately I've gotten a tad too lazy for my own good. This might be the motivation I need to lose the last 6 (or 11 :p ) pounds before our trip in September!

ME, me. but I do think I will start smaller and build up. Like a total of 400 minutes in August and 450 minutes in September and 500 minutes in October.

This may really motivate me. I SOSOSOSO need to lose 10-20 pounds. I can go slow as long as next summer I have hit that target.

Count me in, too. I need something to stay motivated. I gained 40 lbs while pregnant with my son. I've lost 21 lbs in the last six weeks since he was born but still have 24 lbs to go (I'd like to be 5lbs lighter than I was before pregnancy). I still can't fit in any of my shorts (seems baby #3 has greatly expanded the size of my hips and rear). :rotfl:

I bought the Tae Bo tapes at a garage sale. 25 cents each (I got four). I haven't really gone beyond the beginner level. You have reinspired me to pull them out and see how far I can go!

Did my bike! I haven't been on it so long I didn't realize the battery is needing to be replaced. I rode for 25 minutes with like 4 interruptions. :( I love my children but serioulsy!

I did MOST of my Tae Bo. I also had interuptions. My kids only need me when I am on the phone or excersizing.... I do feel good that I worked out. I probably won't feel too good tomorrow when I wake up. I forgot I had muscles in certain areas....And boy, I am NOT limber....

If I am sore, I will probably skip tomorrow and go on Thursday. I may just walk on my treadmill tomorrow. PLEASE....everyone keep me motivated! I have fibromyalgia and excersize is VERY important.

So, has anyone else done their Tae Bo today?????

Good for you! We do need motivation, don't we. :) I hope everyone bugs me as well. I would also like to add some pilates back into my schedule. It was so nice years ago when I was breast feeding I would get up and feed my son and then when everyone was asleep do my pilates and then go back to bed. :) I loved this time. I need to find a new time to get back into them

Go to the zoo, take a nap then walk on your treadmill! do you have a pedometer for when you do you to the zoo and such. That might be a great resource so you can count your mileage. Have a great time. I love the zoo.

This is something I need to work harder on, my water drinking!!! :(

go buy a 1 liter bottle of water (make sure its pretty like fiji or voss ;) ) and then wash it out after using it each day. I have switched from small water bottles (16oz) to the 1 liter and I'm definetly getting all my water in for the day. Plus when you reuse the pretty water bottles the cost per use goes down rather quickly for the $1.79 you had to pay up front for the water. :)

Now that I have lost weight, I really need to start toning more! My exercise routine is always really sporadic due to our schedules, but it is easier in the summer while I am off if I can make myself get up early.

For August, I will shoot for a MINIMUM of twice a week walking and 3 times a week working with weights and/or Pilates for toning. I generally get in a lot of walking during the day anyway, and quite a bit of swimming, so that is not really the issue for me. I mainly need to get on track with toning!

Y'all are good! I really need this challenge - I have such a hard time making myself exercise!

Right now I am walking about a mile each night. When school starts I want to start exercising about 30 minutes four days a week and continue walking a few nights per week. A brand new, beautiful YMCA is opening right by my house, so I'm going to join and make myself go. My work offers 3 hours per week Fitness Release Time so I figure 30 minutes a morning Monday - Thursday will work perfectly for that. Whew - I realize I'm rambling but it helps to visualize my plan...

I think I will get on the treadmill right before dinner. I hear it is good to work out before you eat. Something about your metabolism being high????

I also need to drink more water. Maybe we should all commit to drinking more water too.

I heard that about working out before you eat too. My problem is I feel like I am starving and then let myself eat too much and then I feel like a fatty again. I need to control myself better. m 'n c suggested that I get a large bottle of water to help with my water drinking and I am going to stop and get one on my way to work tonight.

Ok you guys inspired me and I had a stressful day so I decided to start walking again until the kids are back in school and I can go back to the gym. I walked fro 15minutes. When I hit 6 minutes I thought I would die and wished I had brought my cell phone so DH could come pick me up. I contiued though and hit 8 minutes and then turned around and came back so it was technically 16 minutes. By the time I hit 12 I realized I wouldn't die and that I would in fact make it back home LOL. I haven't exercised much since my surgery in October and man I know why LOL. But I am determined to stick with it so make sure you guys ask me if I have walked every afternoon. Thanks for the inspiration. I don't know how I thought I would walk WDW when I couldn't even make it 6 minutes LOL

If it's not too late, I'd like to join too! I seem to find a whole BUNCH of excuses not to exercise every night lately! So this is EXACTLY what I need! We had a challenge like this at work where we all put so much money in a pot every week & then whomever won the challenge won the entire pot...yeah, I didn't win.

You know what I think is really great about this...is that since all my SR friends are doing it too I won't feel like I'm missing out on SR stuff when I'm exercising because we all are at some point during the day!!

I am doing better w/my water though and I'm going to go through the recipes that are listed on the other thread & go shopping this weekend to help with some variety in the food situation!!

Thanks M'nC for starting this whole thing!!

Are your clothes fitting differently? Sometimes you can't rely on the scale to tell you if you've made progress or not. You may be losing fat but replacing it with muscle (which weighs more) so maybe you ARE making progress!

I know I should avoid the scale sometimes though the temptation is hard for me to resist. I get discouraged if I see my numbers go up (which is all they seem to do lately) when I should really be focusing on whether I've eaten well, drank my water, exercised and gotten plenty of rest that week. I know, it sounds cheesy...but it does help!

I used to only walk and do the eliptical until I saw how many more WW exercise points I got for running. LOL! Plus, it helped me over a plateau. Now I actually prefer the running to walking most of the time. But NOT on the treadmill. I like to run outside if I am going to run. It's more interesting to listen to music and watch what is going on around me outside.

Just today at WW meeting the leader said...."We are not our weight. We are more than a number." Which I thought was really fitting & so true. We tend to think of that number the scale shows us as who we are, rather than how clothes are fitting, what we're doing physically & how we're eating. It's a good way to think of it as just a guide not so much a deterant you know?? It's easier said than done for sure, but it's still a good way to think about it if you're having a hard time w/the scale!!

[QUOTE=SunshineGirl;23849]I used to only walk and do the eliptical until I saw how many more WW exercise points I got for running. LOL! Plus, it helped me over a plateau. Now I actually prefer the running to walking most of the time. QUOTE]

NO!
I have hit a plateau and been there for almost a year. I an eat less, I can eat more and I stay the same weight. I have known that I will have do something harder and just not wanted to yet!

So where do you all run? I live in a very busy area and will not let someone see this girl run. I will not torture them that way.

I'm pretty lucky that we live in a residential neighborhood with a 1.8 mile "lap". When I was running I ran as soon as I got home from dropping my boys at school...so there weren't too many people out. Thankfully.

I do carry pepper spray though, more for dogs than for people. My DH was bitten by a neighbor's dog last year so we're more wary than we used to be.

I have to admit that I'm afraid to run while wearing my MP3 player. I'm afraid I won't hear a car coming and I'll get ran over! :p

I know I shouldn't get on the scale every morning but I do. Just part of the morning routine, as soon as I get out of bed I brush my teeth and get on the dumb scale. My clothes don't really feel differently yet, but I think today is only like the 4th day I have exercised. I am defineatly (I have no clue how to spell that!) eating less and my water drinking has improved, but I am going to try not to get too discouraged. Wednesday is my official "weigh in day" so hopefully the numbers will go down by then.

Please count me in, too. I've signed up for the WDW Half Marathon in Jan 2008, and I haven't exercised since May. It is hard in summer with the kids home and the heat, etc. I know.... excuses, excuses. I want that WDW bling though, so I can't get swept and I am not a natural runner. Of course, even if I was, my Pooh Plus shape would make it difficult. :p

I want to join in too...well let me rephrase that I NEED to join in..lol
My best friend moved last summer and she was also my exercise buddy so I've been putting on pounds and getting flabby for a year!! :( I'll set mine for days....I'm thinking I'll set my goal where I increase it each month (maybe we can keep this going??) I'll do 4 days a week in August - 2 walking or biking and 2 one of my workout videos (pilates or the DWTS I'm going to order).

Okay.... August begins Wednesday! Is everyone ready to dig in and COMMIT!!! I am SOOO ready! My boys begin conditioning for football this week, so I thought while they are at practice, I can run around the park that they practice at. Plus, I need to start on my abs. Ready, set, here we go!

I tried adding running to my workout schedule last fall and it nearly killed me! I've come to figure out that I only run when chased. :p

And it's just too hot to run here now. I would like to try again this fall, probably not any sooner than October though.

I admire all of you runners...it's something I wish I could do!

I ran competitively all the way through college, then got to grad school and didn't seem to have as much time for it when I didn't have to go to practice ... it's such a pain in the @$$ to try to start back up again and it's really frustrating me - I think I'd rather start off never having run as opposed to going out for a run and thinking that I used to be able to do so much more so much faster, which is really discouraging :/

I only had time to do 2 miles this morning, later tonight I am going to do more. I have lost 1.7# so far. I felt a lot better about myself this morning. I know it isn't much but the number dropped so that is good for me. :rotfl:

1.7 is a LOT! Good for you!

My official weigh-in day is Tuesday (don't ask me why I picked Tuesdays--who knows?!). :p I'm curious to see what the scale says. I'm in the midst of a wicked case of PMS so maybe I should wait another week...guess we'll see. :computer:

Oh no. I say weigh in w/the PMS because then next week you'll have a GREAT motivation when you see the number go down so far!! Yes, I know, a little demented, but sometimes you have to play mind games with yourself & that dang scale!! Good luck tomorrow!!

My "official" weigh in day isn't till Wednesday but I get on the scale every morning. Sometimes it is a good thing, sometimes not so good! :(

Okay...I cannot use a scale. I will have to go purely on how I feel and how much I excersize and how how my clothes fit.

I'm taking a break from the computer and running up to the treadmill. It's taking everything in me because I have so much work to do!!! But I'm going to be a good girl. Back in 45!

Count me in - I try to go to the gym 3X/week, but lately my routine has been screwed up, so I need motivation to go on the days I don't want to.

Ok my scale is saying I am down 4 pounds since Monday LOL however, that could be all fluid, salt gain and the fact that I ate myself silly on Sunday night LOL. I weighed a bit more than I expected to on Monday when I started WW but they needed a weight so I was honest. I set Wed as my weigh in day and my weight was down 4 pounds. Like I said it could be that I haven't had a soft drink since Monday and that I haven't gorged on a VERY salty food like Mufelletta. Although it was a wonderful motivator :rotfl:
