Most church services were cancelled today around here. We are at a Level 2 emergency, so I will NOT be going anywhere today. I will be cleaning and doing my excersises today. Looks like Northern Ohio and parts of Indiana were hit. (along with others)
Just hoping DH gets home from work safely! He gets off at 6:00 tonight. It is not so much the snow as the blowing snow and the ice underneath the snow.
After cleaning and doing my workout, I will be sitting by the fire drinking some hot tea. Just wish DH was here with me!

We have about 5 inches. We're going to venture out just a bit to look at Gingerbread houses (they are right down the street). Aside from that, we'll probably be in the rest of the day.

We got about 4 inches overnight and today it's snowing steadily and blowing and drifting. We are supposed to have a total of 10 inches before the day is through!

Yeah.....fun, fun....I REALLY do not want the kids to have another snow day tomorrow. But it looks pretty promising that they will have no school. That is 2 snow days already this month and winter has just begun. Plus, I will have several other kids hanging out at the house tomorrow if there is a snow day because I stay at home, and the other parents need a place for their kids while they work. And, once again, I did not buy extra food - I am not prepared....I have peanut butter and bread, mac and cheese and fish sticks. We will not starve. I just wanted to do a little running around tomorrow. Oh well....
And yes....hoping DH gets home safely. He enjoys driving in this kind of weather - as long as the kids are not with him. He has 4 wheel drive, so he should be fine. Plus, the snow should subside before he leaves. But the blowing is going to cause some problems. We live in a rural area, and all roads that lead home are surrounded by flat farming land and curvy roads. WONDERFUL for travelling in blowing snow. :(

Yup, Rain, ice, sleet, snow, wind and it's a freezing cold 24º right now...not a good day to go out here in CT. that's for sure...I REALLY want to be in Florida!! :rotfl:

YES!!!! FLorida sounds WONDERFUL right now. I went in our tanning bed today and imagined I was in sunny FL. Thinking of what I would be doing at WDW right now....Then the buzzer went off and I was quickly back to realty....

:(
I SOOOOO know this. Because I am a stay at home mom when my sister in laws need someone they call me! I had a few friends who used to do this too but they now know I hate watching kids and don't ask anymore. :) As my kids get older though it isn't as bad. I just am not a baby person.

I hope your DH makes it home safely. I live about 10 minutes away from Tricia, so we have the same weather. Our church was one of the few that still had 2 of its 3 services. DH is in charge of running the Powerpoint for worship so he had to go early and stay for both services. Since I would have had to get the girls ready, drive and wade through the snow with the girls by myself, we decided I would just stay home with the girls. After he got there, he said we made the right choice as the roads are horrible. We have that same layer of ice under the snow and the gusts of wind are pretty bad still.
So, I got all my cleaning done and am getting ready to light the fire and when DH gets home we are going to watch White Christmas with the girls and then get ready for our Colts to play!!!!
I myself am hoping for either a snow day or a 2 hour delay tomorrow at least - I'm NOT a morning person and my oldest DD keeps youngest DD entertained when she's home - they haven't come downstairs in over 2 hours! :-)

I hope your DH arrives home safely! Ohhh weee! Call me silly, but I so wish we were snowed in! It would be nice to experience it at least once in my lifetime. I actually asked DH last night what he thought about moving to another state. One that experiences all four seasons. His company actually has quite a few other nationwide locations. Of course he wasn't too interested in the other locations. We were born and raised in Texas! Nothing to brag about.
Well, I Guess I can happily report that it was 36 degrees this morning, but now the sun is coming out and the temp has risen to 54. It's suppose to go even higher the next couple of days. Oh well, one can wish can't they! At least I get to enjoy it through the lives of my SR friends! :) Thanks for sharing. Maybe I need to see if Santa can bring me some snow.

I guess we all wish for what we cannot have! LOL! I really hate the cold weather. I know I have mentioned several times before, but with me having Fibromyalgia, I just do not feel very good in the winter time. Plus, my DD and DH break out in hives in the cold (I know, silly, but true. If they are our for more than 10 minutes in the brisk cold - or even not so cold - they break out in puffy hives and itch and itch and itch!) I would LOVE to live in a warmer climate. I do have to say though, I would miss seeing snow. 1 good snow a year would be sufficient for me though - around Christmas time. Then bring back the 80 degrees please!

Yes, we do wish for things we can't have! LOL. I'm sorry the cold makes you feel bad. I hope you feel better soon. :( There is always a good and bad side to everything! I guess it gets really rough for your DD and DH! That has to be miserable! I'm sure I wouldn't want to see snow the entire winter either. A couple times would suffice, especially during the holidays. If Mr. Sunman would just go away for a little while here during the holidays, I would be evermoreso grateful! :rotfl:

What was that Cindy... All the Sunshine Members who are in cold snowy weather are invited to your house for some FL :sunshine: and Wine... :woohoo: LOL
The weather is not as bad as they were thinking it was going to be so far... Hope it stays that way, but to all the Sunshine members who are not as lucky to live in the warmer states i hope you stay safe and everyone gets home safe as well as keeping warm... A Good day to try for a survey i would think....

We had about 4 inches of snow over night, give or take a little. We were only supposed to get around an inch by daybreak, before the changeover to freezing rain. Well so much for only 1 inch! After the snow stopped we had several inches of freezing rain and sleet, now it is just rain. I'm worried about tonight and tomorrow morning after everything freezes again. I hope we will have a school delay, but my district is very small, so they don't delay very often.
We had church services cancelled today too. It was nice to sleep in and make brunch for a change. Now I am cleaning and hopefully going to do some wrapping a little later. Pats game is on in the background. I was actually thinking about running over to Target, but I don't think I'll make it ther before things start to freeze up again.
Wintery mess today...I'd rather have straight snow.

We have about 6-8 inches of snow here in Detroit. I'm thinking I need to go shovel the driveway but don't really want to. DH is in LA, so he'll be doing no shoveling. We have a very long driveway - garage is not connected to the house. And I don't have a snow blower - but if I don't do it no one will!! I suppose I could ask one of the neighbor boys to shovel. But I'll probably just do it myself!!
I actually was not liking winter too much until today and now with snow on the ground - it does look nice. I just hate when it's cold and it rains.
Thanks for letting me vent - think I'll go shovel now!

We are now under level 3 emergency. So no one is allowed on the roads unless it is an emergency. I called DH and told him to tell his boss that he needs to come home. There is only another hour or so of sunlight. He said he doesn't know if they will let him come home or not yet..... GRRR....

Oh Angela...sorry to hear that. How far away is DH's work from your house? I hope that he is able to get out of there soon!!
Stupid question...what/who determines the levels of emergency? We don't have those here???
Sounds like it's PB sandwiches or Fish Sticks w/a side of mac n' cheese tomorrow for all the kiddies tomorrow!! Sorry!!

I have NO idea who determines the level of emergencies. I am not sure how they determine it either. Must be some sort of equation? Blowing snow X amount of snow fall X Visability???? LOL!
DH is about 15 minutes away. Not too far. It is mostly highway, so as long as the highway is clear, he should be okay. When he went to work this morning, he said he could barely see where the road was, and it was a bit of a stressful drive (at 5 am). It is just safer for him to come home during daylight hours. I would feel better anyway!

We have had a flurry or two but nothing to write home about. It sure is cold, 32 with a wind chill of 24. Our big issue is wind, I would rather have that than snow. Just last Sunday I was walking around Universal sweating! wish I was back there. As I get older I hate the cold even more can't wait to retire and move to Florida. But I just heard on the weather channel that there were some bad storms in Florida.
Hope your hubby gets home without any trouble!

We didnt get any snow ( that would stick). But we got a lot of rain. In fact we have several roads closed and alot of high water everywhere. Some of it has receeded but not nearly enough. We are along the Ohio River, and there are alot of creeks here.
I hope everyone up North is ok...

We had our bad storms last night, lasted about an hr, lots of rain, some lightning but it seemed distant and some wind, nothing major. It a little cooler out today and tonight its suppose to get down to maybe 45 in some areas and be in the mid 60's tomorrow, but back into the 70's for the rest of the week.

Well we got plenty of snow...........I am officially sick of shoveling!!!!! All of our church services were canceled as well today.........so after shoveling the girls and I made sugar cookies (they later decorated with a neighborhood friend who came by to play) and I made lasagna.....boy was it good on a day like today.....but I made too much........I am not one for leftovers so I may send some down to my parents (they only live 2 streets over). My dad will love it!!
Now I am off to finish the laundry, get the kids in the shower and finish picking up before the week starts again.
I am sure we will have school tomorrow (I really do love when the kids have a snow day....our own schedule!)
Stay warm if it is snowing in your area or soak up some sun for me if you are lucky enough to be somewhere warm.

Most mornings I have to drag their butts out of bed! :rotfl: We didn't get that much snow, but what we have is blowing and we got alot of rain earlier today. If all the melting snow freezes I have a feeling we may get a delay in the am...
They (the school district) dropped the ball this past Monday.......the ice was soo bad that the bus couldn't make it to our stop (and many other stops) and the poor bus driver was spinning her wheels just trying to get out of the neighborhood.

Okay, so we made out pretty well over all. Not too much snow, but a lot of sleet and freezing rain yesterday. We were fine........until this morning. The plows didn't come through until late yesterday evening, and the end of my driveway got plowed in (surprising, because we only got a couple inches of snow). Anyway, my DH decided he didn't need to dig it out last night because he could go right through it with his car. WRONG!!! So right before I leave for work today, my husband comes in to ask me to call AAA for a tow truck. The bottom of his car was stuck up on the ice and he couldn't move forward or backwards. Of course, this meant I couldn't move either because his car blocked the end of the driveway. An hour later, the tow truck arrived and, with a lot of effort, was able to pull him out. I sailed right out without any problems afterwards and was 45 minutes late to work. As you can imagine, DH is on my list, and not the good one.:headache:

Oh Pat! I could have written your post myself last winter. I totally feel your pain on that one. My DH did the exact same thing last, same circumstances, except about 10 inches more of snow which promptly turned into big blocks of ice. And guess who got stuck at the end of our driveway? Yeah. Me. After that, I make sure to get right out there myself and start shoveling right away after a snowstorm. DH follows shortly after. Can't have the neighbors think bad about him.

The kids had a snow day today. Oh joy.....They all have been good though. No major fighting issues. The roads are still pretty icy. I went to the store this morning and some roads blended in with the fields, so you could not tell what was road, or field. No snow days for parents I'm afraid. Although bosses need to be somewhat understanding because country roads don't get plowed until after the main ones do. They may get to go in late.

Not most! Some work places do shut down though if it is a Level 3 (which means you can be arrested or ticketed if you are on the road and are not an emergency vehicle). However, DH's place of work just says come in if you can, but you won't be penalized if you cannot make it.....

Same here - most don't get off of work, but there are exceptions at DH's jobsite. Last year we had over 15 inches during one snow fall and there was NO WAY the plows were coming onto our road the first day, so DH stayed home. We had the emergency level situation going on. DH luckily can usually do some computer work at home and did so. No one in his whole department made it in that day...
It was great!! :-)
The next day (even after shoveling for 2 hours the day before) it still took him 30 minutes to dig himself back out due to drifting and took him about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to work (usually 30 minutes). He was the only one in his department that braved it that day!! All time off for that snow was forgiven of everyone becuase it just would have been dangerous otherwise...but that's rare that it happens.

Not here! Everything is open...everything! Even churches! I was suprised to see Anglea's post on Sunday about some being closed. That would never happen here...because we're "hearty Minnesotans"...there's always going to be someone trekking through the stuff to get to church...or the store...or the restaurant...or the movies...
I'd be more open to snow here too, if it meant I could get some snow days every once in awhile!! :rotfl: It takes a lot of snow to get the kids snow days here, which is too bad...but when you get them they are the BESTEST thing ever!! :p
Angela-really? People get ticketed if they're out in the Level 3? I'm intrigued!

Angela-really? People get ticketed if they're out in the Level 3? I'm intrigued!
That is what they say! I have never actually heard of anyone being ticketed, but that is what Level 3 means. That only emergency vehicles are allowed on the roads and that you "could" be ticketed if caught.
We do not get as much snow as lots of other states, so if we get 6 or more inches, it tends to get "bad" for us. We are not use to driving in the snow as much as even Michigan. So a little snow for you is probably a lot of snow for us! LOL
Do people in snowier states have more people with 4 wheel drive? Do they also change tires in the snowy season? Just wondering.
bajam
12-19-2007, 11:50 AM
In OH they want to keep the roads open for the plows and emergency vehicles on level 3 days. In NW OH it is so flat that just a little bit of snow drifts into huge piles. That's why they ticket when non emergency vehicles are out. Plus if you've got tons of people driving just because then there are more accidents. That just makes more work for the emergency crews.

I'm loving the fact that I'm learning so much about other states from this forum!! Most of my friends & family live here! This is so fun!
Angela-I went from a 4 wheel drive SUV to a car w/front wheel drive. There are plenty of 4 wheel drive autos here, but I find as long as there is front wheel drive you're good to drive!! :0)
I've never changed my tires in the winter. This would be interesting to hear more from others on this!!
Again, this is so fun to hear from everyone!!

The reason I asked about the 4 wheel drive, is that DH bought an old Ford Explorer with the 4 wheel drive (sorry if I sound stupid about this subject, but I am not a "car" person!) I was amazed at the gripping and ease of drive I had in the snow. I usually drive a full size van, and the back end is always trying to swing on me. So I just assumed people who have lots of snow, must have 4 wheel drive. So....front wheel drive is better than rear for snow? I know NOTHING about this stuff.....
About the drifting snow... that is SOOO true. I was in the snow on Monday. DH stayed home with ALL of the kids, and I had to run to town for some things. The roads were not too bad (of course I had the 4 wheel drive :) ), but there were a couple of country roads that I took, that I could not tell what was road and what was field. There were drifts all the way across the road and you could not see anything but white. I was glad there were a couple houses on the road that I was able to go by in order to guess where the road was.

I too enjoy learning about the cool little differences in the states.
Jen - do you see very many little commuter cars up there at all or do most people have at least one 4 wheel or front wheel drive car? I'm sure the little commuters aren't good up there with the amount of snow you all must get.
Magical JenK
12-19-2007, 12:24 PM
Oh there's all sorts of autos here! SUVs, bigger SUVs, small cars, mid-size cars, vans, minivans, big ol' boats of cars!! Everything!! My favorite thing to see is those brave souls on their motorcycles in the winter because the roads are dry! Die hards I say!! :0)
Front wheel is better than rear in the snow because the front wheels "pull" the rest of the car through the snow, rather than "push" from a rear wheel drive. Does that make sense? 4 wheel is probably best, but I didn't like the gas guzzling Jeeps I had for 7 years, so I went to a beautiful, more gas friendly Accord this spring!! So far he's doing quite well w/the snow & I was out in the first storm we had w/drifts & blowing snow, etc! He did a great job!!

I was glad there were a couple houses on the road that I was able to go by in order to guess where the road was.[/QUOTE]
Glad you had the 4 wheel drive out that day. The country roads are the worst. I grew up in OH but we are in TN now. I miss the pretty look of the snow but don't miss driving in it or worrying about my husband coming home from work. My kids can't even remember what a real snow fall looks like.
It is all perception and how used to it you are. Last winter my husband got a call that they had things running again at work. He thought there had been a computer glitch or electrical outage or something. The guy said, "no, we were having some blizzard conditions and it was a white out so we brought everyone in." It only lasted for about 15 min. and didn't even stick and was no where near white out but they just weren't used to it.

So true! Someday my goal is to live in a place that I don't need to remember how used to it I am!! :rotfl:
Just reminds me of a story about someone in CA golfing in December w/someone from MN. It was about 50 degrees I think & the CA guy was in pants & a jacket, the guy from MN was in shorts & a tshirt!! 50 in December is warm to us!! :rotfl:

I also would like a cheaper gas vehicle. My full size van - our main vehicle - costs me about $75 - $80 to fill up. It has over 160,000 miles on it, so a new vehicle is in the future (mabye a year, when the 2009 vehicles come out). I want something a bit smaller than the full size van - Trailblazer or something. DH wants a Suburban....Grrr....THAT does not save on gas! The Trailblazer (or auto like it) wouldn't save a ton, but better than a Suburban! My dream car is a Tahoe. I LOVE those things. DH does not think it is big enough....

That's exactly how we were when we moved down here. It was like 50 one morning and I dropped the kids off at school and everyone was wearing arctic coats with big furry hoods and mittens and hats. My kids didn't even have their coats zipped up. I was seriously worried that I would get a note from the teacher that I needed to send proper winter wear to school!

I've always worked in education and never had to go to work in the snow. But in East Tennessee we panic at the first flake, you know the off to the store thing for milk and bread thing.
It has been at least two years years since we have had a snow day. I really would like to have at least one this year. Nothing is better than seeing your school's name on the closed list!
