My DH and I are debating on visiting his best friend and new wife in Houston over the summer. After talking with the wife we all may stay at their place in Houston a few days and go in together and rent a house a few days either in Galveston or South Padre. Which one is better? And what are the "not to be missed" things in Houston, Galveston, and Padre?
And BTW-people from Houston sure know how to throw a party!! I'm talking open bar for three days!!

Well you have to remember the Texas Gulf Coast is not anything close to the Florida Gulf Coast. We typically have very brown water and sharks in August. I've only seen Galveston and its ok. They have Moody Gardens down there and some restaurants. Its also not too far away if you wanted to head north during the day to see NASA or Kemah.
Per Mike - South Padre is just a brown beach (not as bad as Galveston) with not much to do. It gets taken over by the College kids in the spring. Not much besides some beachy bars down there.
As far as Houston goes it just depends on what you want to see and do. We have the typical sports events, zoo, museums, restaurants, ballets, musicals, shopping.

Warning you in advance--there is nothing much to do here. LOL. Sorry! Galveston is nice. They do have things you can do there such as: Moody Gardens and Schliterbaum (spelling?).
Kemah Boardwalk isn't too far. It's really nice. There is NASA and that's pretty much it. Closer to Houston, you have the Galleria (shopping).
In Padre Island, there is even less to do!
If possible, I would head to San Antonio! Your options are just about endless there.
HTH!

Thanks Catherine and Lisa. We are still trying to figure everything out between the two families. Right now I think we've narrowed it down to Houston a day or two and renting a house from a friend of theirs in Galveston for a few days or meeting for a week in the Destin area since its about the same drive for both families. I've been wanting to get back to Destin since my bil's wedding there a few years back--just loved it!!
And DisneyMa --girl if it was football season we'd so be there!! With nachos and brew!! :cooldance:

Destin is on the gulf coast of Florida. If I remember correctly it's between Pensacola and Panama City. Nice beaches and the prettiest blue water.

umm I would vote destin anyday!!!
I think you could have a lot of fun spending a day or two in Houston then driving to Destin.
Lisa - Destin is about 8 hours from Houston. Its between Pensacola and Panama City. It is gorgeous white sandy beaches and blue water.

Thanks guys. It sounds awesome! I've seen quite a few of Florida's beaches, but not that one! That sounds like a winner, Liz!
