View Full Version : So we are going to cancel

My dad can't get situated with a start date in England and the rising cost of things due to the exchange rate has me and Mike deciding it will be better to cancel our trip to the UK. We would have to add on food and hotel for each night of the trip so that in and of itself is a huge budget buster - no free room to stay in nor kitchen to eat from.

So I'm really sad and disappointed but figure I'll just keep saving and maybe we can go in a few years when the economy rebounds. The pound to dollar is just horrible. Plus I should have a wedding to plan and a honeymoon to figure out so that should help the disappointment fade. Good thing is that we'll get our taxes back so that is half the fare so just half is going down the drain. Expensive lesson learned.

At least we still have Disney. :sunshine2:

Sorry to hear about the cancellation! Is there no way to get a airline credit??

More time to plan WDW!

Oh, you have to cancel the tickets and no refund. That is horrible. Sorry you can't go................whats this about a wedding to plan for.

My mom just called British Airways. Its $200 to change our flight to a different date plus the difference in fare. You have to have a specific date to change it to as well. No credits for a later date. Actually $400 lost is really a lot better than we were thinking. We thought $800 would be lost.

I thought so too but the pound is just so high. I doubt it will come down in a year. But I'm pushing for Greece or Germany for a honeymoon location. I really want Greece.

Thanks. I'm giving myself tonight to mope and cry over it and then I"m going to wake up tomorrow and be done with it. I still have free dining I need to book. Maybe we can upgrade to a Moderate now with our airfare refund. :sunshine:

Upgrading at Disney takes the sting out of quite a bit, actually

So sorry you had to cancel London. It was the right thing to do, and you can go again another time when you won't have to worry so much.

And Greece for a honeymoon.... oh my gosh... that is my dream!!!

I think if I can quickly cover the extra costs of a disney upgrade (I think my PPP earnings will do that) then I can make all my SR earnings go towards wherever we pick. We'll see though. Its a long shot but we are so not beach people so Mexico and the Caribbean will not do.

So sorry it didn't work out. That's disappointing. But at least you have plenty of other events and trips to look forward to. Just keep looking to the future, or as Dory would say, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...."

Cate,

:sorry: Sorry you have to cancel this trip. I know how much you were looking forward to it. But, I can say - if DH hadn't had a hotel, we wouldn't have gone - that 2-1 pound/dollar conversion is just horrible! It was outrageously expensive. Perhaps your dad will get another assignment and you'll be able to try again. Set up a DDR at the Rose and Crown, have a pint and talk over dinner about how much $ you saved by not going - $ that can go towards a honeymoon.

The fear of how much it actually was going to cost is what did us in. I had figured the fixed costs pretty easily - transportation and hotel. The unknown which was food and entertainment that I couldn't really guesstimate is the reason we aren't going. I had come up with a "ballpark" figure but I think even it was really low in the grand scheme of things. I want to go and do it right when we go not skimp and be extremely cheap and miss out on important things or come back and get slapped with a bill twice as high as we had planned.

We are doing Rose and Crown so it should be fun. Not quite the real thing but pretty close in my book.

Catherine.....

sorry you had to cancel, but things always happen for a reason........I am with you on not skimping on a trip like this...who wants to worry about every little penny....you want to enjoy yourself! With this economy going the way it is I am glad that the girls and I aren't going to Ireland this summer (that was the original plan, but my friend who lives there will be in Australia and the US most of the summer, so she told us to come summer2009) at first I was a little sad, but now I am thrilled to be waiting and save some more for that trip....

Have fun making your call for an upgrade to disney....it all works out in the end!

Thanks Marilyn. I am doing much better this morning. Mike is pretty good to me. He let me mope and cry without saying anything. He even was on board with still going until I came to the same realization he's been having for a while on the cost and feeling like we are being cheap/cheating ourselves so I appreciate that. It made it feel like a joint decision not like I was pushing one way and he was pushing another.

So I'm going to keep saving and keep exercising so that when we do go I not only have lots of spending money but I'm skinny as well :)

Pam - I look forward to your Ireland trip planning and trip report. That is on my list for when we do go over there. PS I love you really sold me on going there. So pretty.

Sorry you had to cancel, I know how much you were looking forward to it. Having to get Euros for my upcoming trip was a bad enough hit to the pockets book and the dollar to pound exchange is even worse than that.

As for Greece, it is the perfect place for a honeymoon. I would highly recommend you stay in Santorini (in the town of Oia) as the sunsets are amazing!

Megan - have you been to Greece before? I know this is silly but are they friendly to English speakers (do they speak english and do they hate or like Americans/Canadians)? Mike would prefer an english friendly destination whereas I will just figure it out as we go.

Catherine, sorry you had to cancel your trip! I'm a firm beleiver in things happening for a reason! It's great that you two have each other and you're on the same page. Take it from someone that's been married for 27 years, that's very important. :) That alone, should lift up your spirits. :)

The money you will save from not going can definitely add on to the wedding and honeymoon of your dreams! One that the two of you will never forget!

I'm glad you're feeling better!

I have. We did a four day Greek Islands cruise, spent 3 days on Mykonos and spent about a week in Athens and parts north. We had no problems with language and the people were very friendly. We even went into local grocery stores and managed to find what we needed/wanted and buy it. The people in the tourist areas speak better English than if you go off the beaten path.

As far as hating North Americans, we didn't encounter that but as with any travel it is advisable to avoid the hot topics of politics and religion!

Santorini is a place I would love to go back to. It was beautiful and we didn't have nearly enough time there.

Cate-
I'm so sorry you had to cancel your trip. I'd be crying too. But I'm glad you are finding some positives! Like others have said, everything happens for a reason...maybe now Mike will propose in Epcot instead of London??? I mean, wouldn't you rather have Mickey in a photo of your engagement than the Queen?! :rotfl:

Upgrading to a mod would be really fun! Do you know which one you'd like? I've stayed at POFQ, CBR & CSR. Some I love more than others!! But you're in Disney so anywhere is magical!!

I think if we can swing it I'm going to upgrade to CBR. Well actually I know we can swing it its just a matter of booking it. I just read about the photopass sessions at GF and expansion to Poly and SSR resort. If you prepay for the cd you get the session and all the pics for $25 so I think I might book that as well. Gotta keep reading up on it though.

So sorry to hear about your disappointment, Catherine, but it sounds like you have a positive attitude and a lot of good things to look forward to. Upgrading Disney may take some of the sting out, and/or maybe doing something extra that you wouldn't normally do like a fireworks cruise or something.

That honeymoon in Greece sounds like heaven to me:angel:

Well I did the math. It would be an extra $700 to upgrade. I don't know whether to do it or not. going to sleep on it and see what the gods throw my way when I call in the morning. I'll do a blog post on my complete thoughts in a moment :)

I'd have to sleep on $700 too. But I think I have a different perspective that lots. I feel like we don't spend enough time our rooms to not just go ahead and stay at a value.

Catherine----

I'm so sorry for your disappointment. Hopefully the economy will rebound and you will be able to re-schedule.

I am going to Ireland in June for a wedding. I'll take lots of pictures and make lots of notes so maybe when you do get to planning your trip, you can go to Ireland too.

Good luck making your decision to upgrade.

Catherine, so sorry you had to cancel your London trip, I know how much you looked forward to it, but Disney is a Magical alternative.

And remember that you and Mike should be getting your Economic stimulus payment soon too! (if you choose to spend it!)

At least your still taking a trip that will be a blast!

Have you looked into renting points?

Well the upgrade was just a thought. I ended up with an upgrade but it was just from Std to a Preferred room at ASMo which is where we really wanted to stay anyways. All is good and everything is paid for with gift cards so anything I earn between now and then will be for spending money which will be awesome!
