This will be a totally different kind of trip for us. DH and I have taken a few vacations together alone since we have had children (Sedona, Door County, New Orleans), but could we pull off a Disney trip without them? Or should we?

I had booked the flights for our January family vacation using Southwest. One of the things I love about Southwest is that if the fare goes down, you get a credit! In between booking it and our trip the fare went down around $180 for the four of us, leaving enough for one round trip or two one-way tickets to, where else, Orlando.

If you read my 2008 Magical Winter Vacation Trip Report (http://www.sunshinerewardsforum.com/showthread.php?t=6596), you already know that we had a rough start to that trip with USA3000 airlines. What you may not know is that I wrote them after we got back to complain, and they gave us $200 in credits. So between the two airlines, I had enough for two of us to fly to Orlando on Southwest and home from Tampa on USA3000.

I made some complicated (and boring to the rest of you) arrangements for the 3 (really 4) dog2kid part of the family so they could all stay home together, gathered up my Sunshine Rewards credits to pay the deposit, put a bunch of stuff on ebay so we could have food and souvie money while we were there, and it was settled: we were leaving the kids at home and going to Disney for the International Flower & Garden Festival!!

DAY ONE -- SATURDAY, MAY 3:

We got up early… left for the airport at 5 am for a 7:05 flight. We parked at EZPark and were through security in a flash. We got breakfast at Starbucks (thank you ex-BIL for the gift cards left over from my birthday), and were on the plane and in Orlando at the fake monorail in no time. Since we had sent our bags along with the Magical Express tags, we didn’t have to wait at baggage claim and made our way to the ME area and checked in. Pretty soon we were on the bus headed to Pop. We felt free as birds! No kids, no luggage... this was the life!

Check in was a breeze… there were no lines at all. And our room was even ready! By then it was 11:30 and we were starving so we grabbed lunch (chicken Mediterranean flatbread and salad, along with cokes in our refillable mugs, and a piece of the famous tye-dyed cheesecake to share) in the food court before heading to our room.

After lunch we went to check out our room and drop our carry-on luggage off. We were in the 80’s section, building 9, fourth floor. What can I say about the room… it was a Value. Clean, cute, not very big but what do ya really need? I will state right now that I am a hotel snob. I am lucky enough to be able to stay at some really nice places when I travel for work, and our last two family trips we stayed at the Polynesian. In reality, we can't afford that (those Poly trips were the exception for our budget and result of some heavy duty saving and creativity -- how I found Sunshine Rewards and learned to sell on eBay -- not the norm), though, so Pop it was! Also we did not pay for a preferred location, and found that we didn’t need it. It was really close to everything so I was glad to have saved that money. Another thing I was glad of -- I didn't bring my laptop and it's a good thing since it wouldn't have fit in the safe. My camera wouldn't even fit in the safe -- it was that tiny. I guess it was good for my wallet (I only carried my ID and room card with me to the parks) and would have worked for jewelry if I traveled with any, but I tend to wear only my wedding ring and the same necklace & earrings all the time so I don't need to secure anything.

After checking out our room and watching a bit of Disney TV, we walked over to the bus stop. A bus was just pulling up for Downtown Disney -- we had really good bus karma this trip. We had skipped DTD on our last 2 visits, and really didn't have much time there last summer when DD8 and I went, so it was nice to wander around. We picked up our free key chain from Planet Hollywood with our package voucher, bought a bottle of water at the pretzel place, browsed in a few shops, and stuck our heads in Bongos to do some reconnaisance for a future trip. DH and I are foodies and love to try new things, and the Cuban cuisine at Bongos along with the tropical atmosphere is definately something we want to experience next time. And don't forget about the mojitos!

Since we scored the "park hopper, water parks, and more" (or whatever it was called) free upgrade through the promotion I booked with, our admission to Disney Quest was included so we decided to check that out for awhile. Oh my gosh... if DS10 had been with us we would never have been able to drag him out of there. I am not much of an arcade person, but we had watched something on TV -- on the Travel Channel I think -- about the virtual Space Mountain so we had to try that. Twice. This is where you design your own coaster, and then board a simulator to "ride" it. I was skeptical at first and nervous that it would be too curvy. So our first one we did was only rated 2 out of 5 on the "scary" scale. We wished it would have been faster, so we made the next one more intense and it turned out to be a 4 out of 5. That bothered my tummy a bit, so I think 3 might be the most appropriate level for me. Anyway, we visited a few minutes in line for the simulator with a young honeymoon couple from Philadelphia, and there was a boy -- probably 10 or 11 (his virtual coaster was a 5!) -- in line also who told us we had to try the Virtual Pirates of the Caribbean. So after Virtual Space Mountain we went off to conquer pirate ships! That was really fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I don't usually care for 3D experiences and cannot stand stuff on my head (you have to wear these glasses strapped around your forehead). We played one more game before leaving -- a shooting game that reminded me of Indiana Jones. Disney Quest is 5 stories of interactive games and virtual reality type stuff. I think on a longer trip it would be good to take the kids there on a down day, so I was glad we checked it out while we didn't have to pay. At $37 per adult for all day, though, it wasn't really a bad deal. We figure the one game we played would have cost $8 just for that 15 minutes or so at Dave & Busters.

We had a dinner reservation at 7:30ish at Boma, the buffet in Animal Kingdom Lodge. Our plan was to head over around 5:00, and walk out on the savannah and look at animals and then get drinks in the lounge. We caught a bus at Downtown Disney (one was just pulling up, actually) and got there just as planned. The resort was beautiful and we really enjoyed being there. I'm adding that to my list of future places to stay -- maybe if we ever buy DVC and can stay in a villa. We checked in at the podium to see if we could get an earlier seating, and she told us we could probably get seated in about an hour. We used the time to (can you guess?) go see animals, take a few photos, and get drinks in the Victoria Falls lounge, while the Kentucky Derby was on TV. I had a ginger mojito and DH had a beer I think, while we people-watched and caught the Derby out of the corner of our eye. My drink was delicious and DH approved of his beer (a Sam Adams White, I believe)! We were called to our table in less time than we expected, and were greeted by server, Jeff. He looked familiar to me, and later I learned that he'd waited on us at Hollywood Brown Derby at MGM for lunch during our January of 2007 Land & Sea trip. Jeff got another beer for Dave and familiarized us with the buffet. He highly recommended the carrot ginger soup and it did not disappoint. In fact, I loved everything I tried from that dinner! Aside from the soup, especially memorable was the pineapple upside down cheesecake in the dessert section. After dinner we waddled out to the main entrance and caught a taxi back to Pop Century, filled our mugs with Coke, and watched a little TV before turning in.

DAY TWO -- SUNDAY, MAY 4:

The next morning we took our time getting ready and started the day at Animal Kingdom. We probably arrived around 9:30, and headed straight to Expedition Everest for fastpasses. This has to be my absolute favorite ride in all of Disney. Our return time was between 11 and 12:00. We wandered back over to Dinoland and rode Primeval Whirl (fun -- not at all scary like I had thought) and Dinosaur (another favorite!).

We grabbed a bottle of water from a cart and then just pulled up a couple of chairs and people watched until it was time for our FPs at Everest. It was so nice to be able to take the parks at a nice slow pace, hitting our favorites and soaking in the Disney-ness. I knew we would need to do this if we expected to last through Extra Magic Hours in the Magic Kingdom that night, but it was good in any event. 11:00 came, so we went to ride Expedition Everest. Did I mention how much I love this ride? I recently read on another forum about a guy who has ridden it some 2000 times - can you imagine?! Just once per trip (maybe twice) for us though. It was also fun to ride it with my husband :) We usually each ride with one of the kids and have never ridden anything together before.

After escaping the Yeti, we had a lunch reservation at the new Yak & Yeti restaurant. We requested a window table and it was still early enough that our request was granted, so we had a nice view as we ate. We had eaten there in January and knew the portions were large enough to share. We got the lettuce cups appetizer (a repeat from our last trip) and the crispy honey chicken. Both were delicious and more than filling. After lunch (and rubbing the Buddah's belly for good luck - I think that's what you're supposed to do, right?), we slowly made our way out of the park - stopping in a few shops along the way. Since we were taking a nice, slow pace neither of us felt the need for a nap so we caught the bus directly to the Magic Kingdom.

How'd you sneak in a WDW trip and I missed it!!! So glad you're writing a trip report. I'm enjoying it so far. I would love to do a relaxing trip like that!

DAY TWO -- SUNDAY, MAY 4 (continued)

We left Animal Kingdom around 1:30 and caught a bus for Magic Kingdom with no wait. Lucky us - we didn't have to wait for buses at all this trip. I was a little unsure about the crowds since we wouldn't be getting to MK until the afternoon, but they were very manageable. We didn't rush to get to anything... in fact we even shopped a bit as we walked down Main Street. We started in Tomorrowland this trip, and first up was Space Mountain. There was a posted 20-minute wait but I think it was much shorter than that. We also did Buzz Lightyear, TTA, Carousel of Progress, and Stitch's Great Escape (this was a first) before heading over to Toontown to catch the train to Frontierland. We picked up some popcorn and a coke for the ride -- but I was so disappointed in the popcorn. It desperately needed salt :( Anyway, after a relaxing train ride we grabbed a FP for Splash Mountain and got in line to ride Big Thunder -- again, about a 20-minute wait here. After that, we headed into Adventureland and rode Pirates (only a 5- or 10-minute wait) and then grabed Dole Whips before checking out Haunted Mansion (walk-on!), and Mickey's Philharmagic and It's a Small World (no waits) in Fantasyland.

We had planned to just snack and/or grab hot dogs at Casey's for dinner, but by this time we were wanting to sit down and have a leisurely dinner and maybe a drink, so we took a boat over to the Polynesian. Ahhhh... I had missed this place! We walked through the pool area and up to the Great Ceremonial Hut and grabbed a window table in the Tambu Lounge. We ordered drinks, honey citrus wings, and crab cakes (both came with a little side salad) and that was our dinner. Very nice!! It was fun watching people checking into 'Ohana and coming and going in the lounge. The scenery out the window was beautiful, the tiki torches were already lit, and it was a nice break. Before we left the Poly we visited the shops and tossed a coin into the fountain and wished to return. Then it was time to ride the real monorail!

DH and I love riding the monorail! I love seeing the castle out the window and driving by the resorts and through the Contemporary - seeing excited people going to Chef Mickey's! We could have stayed on awhile but we got off at Magic Kingdom and headed back into the park. We'd really done everything we wanted to do before, but it was time for our fastpasses for Splash so we rode that. Unfortunately the ride got stuck on the way up the hill to the big drop, so we sat in the boat listening to the sound track ("I'll show you a laughing place...") over and over and over again for more than 20 minutes. It kind of put a damper on that experience (pun intended!), and it was a shame since it was DH's first time to ride. It was fun riding Splash Mt. at night, though. I also love riding Big Thunder Mountain at night, but after the bad Splash experience we were ready to keep our feet on the ground awhile.

By then it was nearly time for Spectromagic so we found a good place to stand in Frontierland and waited for the parade. This was the only place I felt crowded at all. I don't like really big crowds where people are touching, but for the sake of seeing Spectro all the way through, we endured. Spectromagic was beautiful! I couldn't get any photos since we didn't have a great front row spot, but we both enjoyed it. Sometimes I think we miss things when looking at them through a camera anyway so it was just as well. After Spectro, we headed to the perfect spot we had selected for Wishes viewing (in the middle of Main Street, between Casey's and the Plaza) and it was just about to start. It was even more magical and kind of romantic to watch it with alone my hubby (in a sea of people, LOL!).

EMH at the Magic Kingdom was that night and the park would be open till 2 am for us, but we decided we'd seen and done everything we really wanted to do and were ready to head back to the hotel and rest up for our big day at Epcot on Monday. We caught the monorail that went to buses, but unfortunately neither of us read very well and it turned out that we headed to the bus stops for off-property resorts. We were puzzled that there weren't any Disney buses, and once we figured out what we'd done and found our way to the proper stop we only had to wait about 5 minutes for a bus to Pop. When we got back I sat at the pool and dangled my feet while DH went for Cokes (our nightly ritual!) and a delicious cookie to share. I must have fallen asleep the moment we hit our room because I don't remember even turning on the TV or anything.

Love reading this! Hopefully DH and I can take a 2 day trip someday. I always get the "mother guilt" for not taking my kids to fun places. So, 2 days is all I probably would be able to do. But it would be nice. Of course, I still want to take a daughter/mom trip too....I better start saving my pennies....

Can't wait to read more!

I'm loving your trip report also!!! We went to Disney quite a few times before kids and it is a totally different experience! Some day we'll go without them again. The only "crowd" issue we experienced on our recent trip was at the parades. I think parades can bring out the worst in people- some are down right rude!!

Glad you were having such a great and relaxing trip!!

How did the kids feel about you all going to Disney without them?:)

DAY 3 -- MONDAY, MAY 5

We slept in by Disney standards on Monday. Even after getting home around midnight (vs. 2 or 3) the night before, we were worn out after two parks. We had 'in room dining' :rotfl: (pop tarts for DH; South Beach Diet bar for me and coffee/hot chocolate in our mugs), took our time getting dressed, and arrived at Epcot around 10 or 10:30. It was a gorgeous, sunny, just a touch breezy day -- as it had been since we arrived. The weather couldn't have been more perfect for this time of year. I had been a little afraid that it might rain a lot, being Florida's rainy season (I had heard), but there wasn't a drop to be found. Sadly, I think they are in a draught and could use the rain, but happily it didn't rain on our vacation.

So Epcot! I told DH that I wanted to get one photo of the two of us to bring home and frame from this trip and guess what? We didn't get one single photo of the two of us :( So I will probably be framing my picture of the Stitch topiary, lol. I'll post some pics later, but we did take a lot of pictures of all the gorgeous flowers and topiaries. One thing we saw was a giant plant from the rainforest that only blooms once and it stands over 6 feet tall. It emits a rotting smell, and flies instead of bees pollinate this thing since it smells so bad. Interesting fact. My DH is a flower and garden junkie -- he thought this was really cool!

After soaking in some of the Epcot atmosphere, we wandered over to the Flower & Garden show pavillion and learned that there was a seminar on hanging baskets just beginning, so we sat in on that and learned that over 900 hanging baskets were 'on stage' at Disney and that they grow them all themselves! Three of the horticulturists were there doing demonstrations and we all made a little lanyard craft with dried flowers which they laminated for us as a souvenir. We shopped a bit in the store, and then headed over to grab a fastpass for Test Track and get in line for Mission Space. I have never ridden MS and was VERY apprehenshive, to say the least. DH assured me that the 2nd virtual space mountain we had done at DQ was more intense than MS (plus Gary Sinise was the narrater which helped sway me!), so I decided to be a brave soul and ride it. We got in line (about a 15 min wait) when I noticed I'd missed a call on my cell from the school nurse. My heart sank and I was sick wondering what had happened so I really didn't notice much of the queue or have a chance to worry about the ride. While we waited in line, I called the nurse back and it turned out to be nothing -- DS10 had something in his eye and she just wanted to tell me -- so I gave her SIL's phone number to call back if she needed anything else. Anyway, then it was time to board our spacecraft! If you follow all the instructions (and don't look sideways), this ride will not make you sick. I did, and I wasn't, and it was a great experience! Yeah!

Next up was Test Track. I love this ride, too -- nothing to worry about there. We had a little time after that to wander around and take some more photos before heading to Mexico for lunch at San Angel Inn. This was a new restaurant for us, and I'd been looking forward to it. There were a lot of walkups trying to get in, getting angry when they were turned away because they didn't have a reservation. Fortunately we had an ADR and we were eating in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo!! I had a yummy margarita of course, and DH had a Dos Equis Amber - which we can't get in St. Louis. I had nachos and he had a pork dish -- both were good but I can't say they were the best. We were there for the ambiance, however, and it was everything I had expected and more! We ate too much, though -- I really do think we could have shared either dish and been satisfied.

to be continued because I have to go to work now...

I am so enjoying your trip report! It sounds like the two of you had a blast.
I think it is nice to get away ..... just the two of us. We did it a few times when the girls were kiddos. I can't wait to read more.
